Post Life with a BRT
I got my puppy today!!!!!!!! He's big and goofy and lovey and playful and everything I could have wanted. :D :D :D
Right now he's sleeping, right beside me of course. He hasn't left my side for more then a few minuets all day.
We went to the pet store this morning and he was a little scared of the sliding doors but after I went through them a couple of times he sniffed at them and walked right on in, such a brave boy.
When we were checking out he saw a stuffed toy on a shelve and pulled it down, he loved it so of course we had to get that too.
He still doesn't have a name and I feel kind of bad about calling him 'puppy' but I'm thinking I'm going to call him Sarge, because when he sits at my feet he kinda looks at me like he's waiting for me to give him the order to charge. Plus he's wearing a camo collar
I love him already...lol. Just in case no one had noticed.
We went to carry water to the horse a little bit ago and it's pretty hot out, so he really wasn't into the idea at all until he saw me using a water hose to fill the buckets  that seemed to change the his mind about being outside. After that the problem wasn't trying to get him to walk on a leash hooked to my belt but to get his to keep his head out of the buckets.
After waiting so long - or at least it felt that way to me - it's kinda hard to believe that he's here right now, though it was kinda weird having him want to go into the bathroom with me, a place my other dogs have always avoided like the plague. Plus it's so nice to have a dog who wants to be with me, Zip was my baby and I loved him so much that I still can't really talk about him, but he was very independent, he loved me, sure, but he had to have time to himself or he would get wound up. And he was never under foot.
Opps, he's up now, time to go potty. More later.

you do know he has NEVER had a leash on before you snapped one on him - that is grandmas biggest fault - they are so obedient all the time and stay with me (as a group or by themselves) I never use a leash
so he is doing good!!

I like Sarge. :D I do agree they look like they could crack a walnut when they sit and ask for the next command. Vik will attempt anything I ask him too! Really! So don't be surprised when he starts reading your mind! The bathroom is Vik's favorite place since he drinks from the tub faucet, and the tile floors are cool!
It just gets better! Have fun!

Sarge it is. His name I mean, at least at home, on paper he'll be Kismet's Kiss.
He's doing really good, on leash he's doing great, he only stops to fight the leash once or twice when we first start out the door but a few steps ahead and a pat on the leg and he's right back by my side.
He met my horse yesterday and was totally fine after a wee growl that was so quiet I could hardly hear it. He also met Suise-Q, the next door dog, she's just a little bigger then him right now and they had fun playing for a little bit - both on leash so that nothing got too rough - and then we came inside and had a little down time in his crate.
After he had had a little nap we went for a walk and joy of joys he pooped and peed outside. :D :D :D I must have looked crazy, getting so excited about him going potty but he enjoyed all the praise and that's what counts. I know that it's crazy to feel so smug about the fact that he picks up on things so easy but I can't seem to help it, the fact that he's so smart and only needs to be told something one or two times has little to do with me, but I can't help but feel like the next dog whisperer when he shows just how smart he is.
I've taken a few pictures for you guys. I find myself reaching for the camera all the time so I'll try to add the good ones. Never done it before so sorry if it doesn't work right.

Post Re: Life with a BRT
He's 12 weeks old right now...almost 13.
Last night we went to the fair, to tractor pulls, I was a little worried about his ears so I put a cotton ball in each ear and away we went. When we got there I pulled out his chew rope and he laid down and went to sleep. After a while I woke him up and we moved pretty far away from the noise and I took the cotton out and we walk forward slowly, he was showing very little stress so we stopped where we were and took a little break, and when he relaxed we moved a little farther up. The only problem we had all night was when he found a hamburger wrapper and didn't want to give it to me but a firm "Drop it" and my hand under his mouth was all that was needed - something we had been working on with his toys :D
We are still working on house training, but crazy as it sounds he will not go in our yard :?: But if we walk across the road to the gravel drive he'll squat down and go. I take him out a lot and we stay out for about 15 minuets each time trying to get him to potty, and all he'll do is roll in the grass and sit on my feet and walk around and sniff. Go across the road and BAM! it's like magic gravel.
I really don't want him to go in the house so it's great that he'll potty outside but I'm afraid that when the shop opens back up they are not going to like him going in their driveway, I mean it is a workplace. I'm really not sure what to do about this or if I even need to do anything other then keep working on the potty comand and when he has it down then have him start going in our yard.
I've had so many people ask what kind of dog he is already, and mostly I don't mind but yesterday a man had the nerve to ask me if he was a poodle  I mean no offence to anyone who has a poodle, but come on :!:
Anyway all in all we are doing great. Already he'll do a sit 90% of the time and if I have his stuffed cow he'll do a down for him so we are moving right along. He had a bath this morning and the hardest part was trying to keep him from laying down and trying to roll around in the water. I putt him up on a table to comb and dry him and after a few minuets he didn't mind at all. He was a little scared of the hair dryer so I left it run and just laid it on the table a little bit away from him once he calmed down I praised him and then moved it a little bit closer and so on until I was using it on him with no problem at all. :D
I'm so proud of him, so sorry if I'm bragging a little. But then again I think you guys will understand.

I feel your pain about the "is he a poodle?" comment. I have gotten that and is he a labradoodle many times. Mine ,Juri,is over 50 lbs now and older that your pup and I have not gotten any poodle comments in 2 weeks. Now it is ,"Is he is a water dog?", when wet his hair is curly so I don't mind that one. I am sure soon it will be some other breed. I always take the opportunity to answer their question and brag on BRT and Helene's accomplishments with their training here in the US. Best of luck with your new baby! The love and pride you feel now will only grow unbelievably stronger!!!

I have decided to cut onlookers some slack. The BRTs are exotic and beautiful dogs that command a lot of attention. Since I had never seen a BRT before my pup, I would have been throwing out the same comments. Ivan is the first BRT in my vet's very large practice. So if he had never seen one before...

We love RBK BRT bragging! Otherwise we'd all feel a little stupid when we brag about our own pups! They really are the best puppies. As for the pee spot, as long as you pick up the doodoo and maybe once in a while hose down the area he pees, they probably won't care. Besides, it won't be long now before he feels the need to expand his territory, so will mark abroad! Vik shocked me by lifting his leg by the time he was 5 months old. Then he became the marking champ.

I think I would stop using someone elses property as the potty site.

The very first tinkle accident Dory had in our house on day one was wiped up with an old rag. I then took this old rag outside and left it on the ground where I wanted her to learn to go pee. I did the same thing with a bit of her poopy. Within 24 hours she knew where she was supposed to go. I would not give in to Sarge's wanting to go on the neighbors driveway. That's just my opinion. :P

I think Allison is 100% right on when it comes to the dreaded Labradoodle remarks. We just have to be patient for the next 20 years while the breed becomes more well known. Dory is my vet's first BRT as well. I think exotic is a great way to describe our BRTs. :)
I never get tired of talking about my puppy when people ask about her. I don't even mind the Doodle remarks now as the bigger your puppy gets the less the question is asked. lol

Post Re: Life with a BRT
ok, my daughters give me a hard time because every time someone asks me what kind of dog he is i say," he's a black (pause) russian (pause) terrier." and i don't purposely pause, i just do it to be clear - they don't know the breed, have never heard of the breed, and if i don't pause they usually ask me to repeat it. but it drives my girls nuts! ha! it probably wouldn't matter how i said it they would find something to be annoyed with - they're 12 and 14! so, anyway, everyday i have to tell at least 3 people about him. but i never get tired of it either!
